Robert was educated at Marlborough College, Wiltshire and studied French Art and Civilization at the Université de la Sorbonne, Paris. He worked for Alexander and Berendt in London, leading Dealers in 18th Century French Court furniture, before pursuing his career as a Sotheby’s Works of Art Course Trainee in London. Robert started Robert Young Antiques in 1975 and 1977 saw the opening of his shop at 50 Battersea Bridge Road (which was extended later at 68 Battersea Bridge Road) specialising in Painted and Country Furniture and Folk Art. He wrote “Folk Art”, published by Mitchell Beazley in 1999 and co-wrote “Treen for the Table” with Dr. Jonathan Levi in 1998, published by the Antique Collector’s Club. Robert has had various articles published in “The Antique Collector”, “World of Interiors”, “Country Living” and “Miller’s Antique Guides” for whom he is a specialist consultant. In 2000 he held the first Annual Exhibition of Antique Folk Art, still held annually in May at 68 Battersea Bridge Road, and published its first illustrated catalogue. Regularly exhibiting at the previously named Summer Olympia, San Francisco Fall Antiques Show and New York Winter Antiques Show, Robert is a specialist vetter at a number of antiques fairs including The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show, the Olympia International Art and Antiques Fair in June and Winter Fine Art and Antiques Fair, Olympia in London and The Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair. He is also a member of the BADA, CINOA, BIDA, Chelsea Arts Club and Regional Furniture History Society. |
